Collection: France

France is the deepest part of our list: Bordeaux and Burgundy first, then Champagne, the Rhône, the Loire and Alsace.

How French labels work. France names wine after the place, not the grape — so a bottle says Chablis rather than Chardonnay, and Pauillac rather than Cabernet Sauvignon. The narrower the place on the label, the smaller and usually the better-sited the vineyard behind it. That one rule gets you most of the way through this page.
