Chateau Prieure Lichine 2014, Margaux (1x75cl)

Prieuré-Lichine is a Fourth Growth of Margaux, classified in 1855. The estate takes its name from Alexis Lichine, the Russian-American wine writer and merchant who bought it in 1951 and did more than almost anyone to explain Bordeaux to the English-speaking world.

Its unusual shape. The estate is not one block. Its vineyards are scattered in small parcels across all five communes of the Margaux appellation, which makes it something of a survey of Margaux in a single bottle.

Why 2014. A long, dry autumn rescued the vintage after a difficult summer. The wines are classically proportioned — fresher and lighter-framed than 2015 or 2018, with good acidity. This is a Margaux to drink rather than store.

When to drink it. Now, decanted an hour. Lamb, duck, mushroom dishes.
