Château Pavie

Château Pavie is a Premier Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Émilion — the top rank of that appellation's classification, a group of only a handful of estates. It sits on a limestone slope on the Right Bank, and it is one of the most talked-about names in modern Bordeaux.

Right Bank, not Left

This is the difference that matters most. Saint-Émilion is Merlot country, with Cabernet Franc alongside it — not the Cabernet Sauvignon of the Médoc.

In practice that means rounder, softer, plusher wine that is approachable years earlier than a Left Bank Cabernet blend of the same age. If you have found young Bordeaux austere and drying, the Right Bank is where to go.

Pavie and Arômes de Pavie

Château Pavie — the grand vin. Concentrated, powerful and built to age. Priced as a Classé A wine is priced.

Arômes de Pavie — the second wine, and the reason most people on this site meet the estate. Same ownership, same team, same hill; a fraction of the price, and ready to drink now. It is one of our best-selling Bordeaux.

Château Pavie Decesse — a separate, smaller estate on the plateau above Pavie, under the same ownership. Not the same wine, but the same hand.

How to choose

  • To understand the estate without the price — Arômes de Pavie. Decant 30–60 minutes. Roast pork, duck, mushroom dishes.
  • An occasion, or to cellar — Château Pavie itself. Decant ninety minutes.
  • Someone who finds Médoc too firm — anything on this page. That is the whole point of the Right Bank.

A note on the classification

Saint-Émilion re-ranks its estates roughly every ten years, unlike the Médoc's frozen 1855 list. Pavie was promoted to Classé A in 2012. In 2022 several estates chose to leave the system altogether — which is worth knowing if you compare labels and find the wording has changed between vintages.
