1996 turns thirty in 2026, which makes it the vintage people come looking for when they need a thirtieth birthday, a thirtieth wedding anniversary, or a company's thirtieth year.

What the year was actually like. In Bordeaux, 1996 was a strong year on the Left Bank — Cabernet ripened well in the Médoc while Merlot on the Right Bank had a harder time. That makes Pauillac, Saint-Julien and Saint-Estèphe the safer picks from this vintage. In Burgundy it was a firm, structured year that needed patience and is now drinking.

Buying a thirty-year-old wine. Condition matters more than the label at this age. Everything here is physically in our warehouse, not sourced on demand. Stand the bottle upright for a day before opening, decant gently off the sediment, and do not be surprised if it needs less air than a young wine, not more.
