What to know. Grüner Veltliner is the national white — dry, peppery, high in acid, and one of the few wines that copes with asparagus, artichoke and anything vinegared. Wachau Riesling is drier and firmer than its German equivalent. For reds, Burgenland's Blaufränkisch sits somewhere between Pinot Noir and Syrah in weight. Prices here are still well below the quality on offer.
