Worth knowing. Carmenère is Chile's own grape — it came from Bordeaux, was thought lost to phylloxera, and turned up in Chilean vineyards misidentified as Merlot. It gives a softer, herbal red. Maipo and Colchagua are the warm valleys for Cabernet; Casablanca and Leyda are cooled by the Pacific and make the Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
