2016 turns ten in 2026, and it is also, on its own merits, one of the best vintages of the century.

What the year was actually like. Bordeaux 2016 is the rare vintage that got both concentration and freshness — a dry summer followed by well-timed September rain. It is widely rated alongside 2005, 2009 and 2010, and it will keep for decades. Burgundy 2016 was the opposite story: frost cut production severely, so quantities are small and prices reflect that.

Ten years is the wrong time to open Bordeaux 2016. Worth saying plainly: this vintage is built to last, and a tenth-anniversary bottle opened tonight will show you structure rather than pleasure. If the occasion is fixed, decant it two hours. If you can lay it down instead, it will repay you.
