The name has to survive being searched. A recognised estate or appellation does that; a clever obscure find often does not, however good it tastes.

If they know wine well — a Premier Cru from a respected grower, or a mature vintage, says more than a famous label at the same price.

If it is a corporate gift — check the recipient's company policy first. Banks, law firms and listed companies often cap the value of gifts staff may accept.
