Collection: Château Pontet-Canet

Pontet-Canet is a Fifth Growth of Pauillac on the 1855 list — and one of the clearest examples of why that list is no longer a reliable guide to quality. For two decades it has been rated, and priced, well above its classification.

The reason is a decision the estate made that almost no other classified Bordeaux château has been willing to copy.

What makes it different

Pontet-Canet is farmed biodynamically. In practice that means: horses working the vineyard instead of tractors, so the soil is not compacted; no synthetic treatments; and a portion of the wine aged in clay amphorae made from the estate's own soil rather than only in oak barrels.

That last point is the one that shows in the glass. Amphorae add no flavour of their own, so the wine tastes more of the vineyard and less of the barrel. It is the opposite of the oak-heavy direction most of Bordeaux took in the 1990s.

This is not a marketing position. It is expensive, it is labour-intensive, and the estate has been doing it since the early 2000s.

Which vintage

Vintage Character What to do with it
2008 The serious one. A strong year at this estate, now fully mature — tannins resolved, moved from fruit into earth, tobacco and cedar Open it. Decant an hour
2007 A cool, wet year and one of the weakest of the decade in Bordeaux The cheap way to taste this estate. Nothing to wait for
2011 Mid-weight. Firmer and fresher than the hot years, classically Pauillac in shape Drinking now. Decant a full hour
2012 Mid-weight Left Bank. Medium-bodied and comes round early The everyday one

If you are buying one bottle to understand this estate, buy the 2008. The others are good value; 2008 is the one that shows you why people talk about Pontet-Canet.

What Pauillac means

The commune of Latour, Lafite and Mouton. Pauillac reds are the most structured and longest-lived on the Left Bank — firm cassis fruit with cedar and graphite behind it. If Margaux is the perfumed one and Saint-Julien the balanced one, Pauillac is the serious one.

A note on older bottles

Fill level and cork condition vary on wines of this age. Read each listing before buying. If you are giving an older vintage as a gift, tell us and we will check the bottle before it goes out.
