Red Burgundy is Pinot Noir and nothing else — lighter in colour than most people expect, and built on perfume and acidity rather than weight.

Reading the ladder. Bourgogne Rouge covers the whole region; then a village name such as Gevrey-Chambertin or Volnay; then Premier Cru, which adds a named plot; then Grand Cru, which drops the village name entirely. Each step up narrows the vineyard. Premier Cru from a good grower is usually the sweet spot on price.
