Chinese New Year Wine Gifts 2027 農曆新年送禮

Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February — eleven days earlier than 2026. That matters more than it sounds: the buying peak moves back into January, and corporate gift orders that went out in early February last year need to go out in late January this time.

The three separate occasions

People treat Chinese New Year as one event. For wine it is three, and they call for different bottles.

團年飯 — the reunion dinner, New Year's Eve. A large family table, many dishes, a lot of them rich and braised. This is where a real bottle earns its place. Something with enough structure for roast meats but not so tannic that it fights the sweeter dishes.

拜年 — visiting over the following days. You are arriving at someone else's home, often several homes in one day. The bottle needs to be recognisable on sight and easy to carry. This is the champagne and classified-Bordeaux slot.

開年 — the corporate return to work. Client and staff gifts, usually by the case. Here the label does the talking, and consistency across the whole order matters more than any single bottle.

What Hong Kong actually buys, and why

Red over white. The colour carries meaning at this time of year, and a red bottle in a red box reads correctly. This is not a wine-quality argument — it is a gifting one, and it is real.

Case quantities matter. Six and eight are auspicious; four is avoided. If you are sending a case as a corporate gift, this is worth getting right — it costs nothing and the recipient notices.

Gold and red labels outperform. Same reason. A dark, sober label that would impress a collector can read as sombre at Chinese New Year.

Champagne for 開年. The return-to-work celebration is the one moment where sparkling is the obvious choice rather than a compromise.

What to pour with the food

Roast pork and crispy skin. Acidity cuts the fat. Champagne, or a Bordeaux with some age rather than a young one.

Braised dishes — abalone, sea cucumber, dried oyster, fat choy. These are savoury and sticky rather than heavy. A mature Bordeaux or a Rioja Reserva works; a young tannic wine does not.

Poon choi 盆菜. Everything in one pot, so no wine matches all of it. Pick something forgiving: Champagne, or a lighter red served slightly cool.

Sweet dishes and 年糕. Nothing dry survives them. Either stop drinking, or pour a genuinely sweet wine.

Ordering

Because 2027 is early, work back from 6 February. Corporate case orders need lead time for consolidation and delivery scheduling — talk to us in early January, not late. Individual gifts are more flexible, but the week before Chinese New Year is the busiest delivery period of the year in Hong Kong for everyone, not just us.

Delivery to home, office or hotel anywhere in Hong Kong. Free delivery over HK$800.
