Le Petit Haut Lafitte is the second wine of Château Smith Haut Lafitte, a Cru Classé de Graves in Pessac-Léognan.

Pessac-Léognan, not Médoc. This is the appellation just outside the city of Bordeaux, on gravel soils. The reds carry a smoky, mineral edge that Médoc wines do not — it is the most distinctive of the Left Bank styles.

What a second wine gives you. Same estate, same team, younger vines. It is ready sooner than the main label and costs a fraction of it.

When to drink it. Now. Decant thirty minutes. Roast meat, duck, grilled vegetables — the smoky character makes it better with a grill than most Bordeaux.
