Kavalan Solist Single Cask Strength Port Cask (1x70cl)

Kavalan single malt from Taiwan. Two things on the label worth knowing: Solist is Kavalan's single-cask range, so this comes from one barrel rather than a blend of many; and cask strength means it is bottled without dilution, so it is stronger than a standard bottling and takes water well. This one is a port cask.

Taiwan's climate is the interesting part — whisky matures faster there than in Scotland, so Taiwanese malts often show more cask character than their years would suggest. A good gift for a Scotch drinker who thinks they have tried everything.

Tasting notes

Port-cask whisky usually leans towards red fruit, dried berries and a sweet, slightly jammy richness. Try a small pour neat first, then add water a few drops at a time — at cask strength that is usually where the aromas open up.
