Montrose is a Second Growth of Saint-Estèphe, classified in 1855, and it has a specific reputation: it is one of the longest-lived wines in Bordeaux. The estate is sometimes called the Latour of Saint-Estèphe, which tells you the register.

What Saint-Estèphe means. The northernmost of the great Left Bank communes, on heavier clay. The wines are firmer and slower to open than Margaux or Saint-Julien, and they reward patience more than any other commune.

When to drink it. 2011 is a mid-weight vintage, which for Montrose means it is approachable earlier than usual — but still decant it a full ninety minutes. Beef, venison, aged hard cheese.

Is it worth it? A Second Growth with this reputation from a vintage that is not a trophy year is one of the better value propositions in classified Bordeaux.
