Right bank Bordeaux from Saint-Emilion, where the blends are led by Merlot. That usually means a rounder, softer style than the Cabernet-driven wines across the river, which is why right bank Bordeaux tends to be the easier choice when you are opening a bottle with people who don't drink much red.

Good with beef, roast pork, or a Cantonese dinner with braised dishes. Decant it for thirty minutes if you have time, and serve slightly below room temperature.

Tasting notes

Merlot-led Saint-Emilion typically shows plum, black cherry and a hint of cocoa or sweet spice from barrel ageing, with rounder tannin and a softer middle than left bank Bordeaux. Usually approachable while still young.
