Kirwan is a Third Growth of Margaux, classified in 1855, and one of the older estates in the commune — it takes its name from an Irish merchant who owned it in the eighteenth century.

What Margaux means. Of the Left Bank communes, Margaux is the one described as the most perfumed and least austere. Cabernet Sauvignon leads, with Merlot filling out the middle. If you find Pauillac too firm, Margaux is where to look.

Why 2013. A difficult, light vintage in Bordeaux — which makes a classified growth from it an easy recommendation for drinking rather than keeping. It is fully open now, and it costs a fraction of what the same label costs in a strong year.

When to drink it. Now. Decant thirty to sixty minutes. Lamb, duck, mushroom dishes.
