Gloria has an unusual origin. It was assembled from scratch after 1942 by Henri Martin, who bought up small parcels from classified Saint-Julien estates one at a time. The vineyard is therefore made of classified-growth land — but because the 1855 classification ranks châteaux and not vineyards, Gloria itself has no classification at all.

What that means for you. Saint-Julien terroir from good parcels, at a price the 1855 list keeps artificially low. It is one of the best-known value bottles in Bordeaux for exactly this reason.

The style. Approachable, rounded Saint-Julien — perfume and structure in balance, ready earlier than most classified wines.

When to drink it. 2013 was a light vintage, so it is fully open now. Decant thirty minutes. Roast meat, duck, a weeknight table.
