Where the value is. A classified estate's second wine is made at the same château, by the same team, usually from younger vines. It carries the estate's house style at a fraction of the price. That is why so much of what we sell is Chevalier de Lascombes, Sarget de Gruaud Larose, Connetable de Talbot, Les Griffons de Pichon Baron, Le Petit Ducru, Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré and Le Clementin du Pape Clement — real Bordeaux addresses, everyday prices.
The estates themselves. Château Lascombes, Pontet-Canet, Branaire-Ducru, Lagrange, Pape Clement, Gazin, Cantemerle, La Tour Carnet, Kirwan, d'Issan, Sociando-Mallet, Montrose, Cos d'Estournel, Lynch-Bages, Palmer and Ducru-Beaucaillou, across a spread of vintages.
Which vintage? Older bottles are not automatically better. Anything over ten years may be near or past its window and cork condition varies — read the notes before buying. If you are drinking this week rather than cellaring, a recent vintage of a second wine is usually the better bet.
