Portugal, still one of the least-followed wine countries and one of the cheapest to explore.

Where to start. The Douro grows the same grapes that go into Port but ferments them dry — the reds are dark, firm and considerably cheaper than the equivalent from France. Alentejo in the south is warmer and softer. Vinho Verde in the north is light, low in alcohol and sometimes faintly spritzy. Port itself sits at the other end: fortified, sweet, and built to keep.
