What the labels mean. An age statement refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle, so a 12-year-old may contain older stock. No-age-statement bottlings are not automatically lesser — they are blended to a house style rather than to a number, and became common when demand outran the stock that had been laid down years earlier. Single malt comes from one distillery; blended draws on several.
