Is Wine Really Cheaper in Hong Kong?

Short answer: usually yes, and often by more than people expect. Here is why, with the actual numbers.

Hong Kong charges no duty on wine

Duty on wine was abolished in February 2008. The rate went from 40% to zero and has stayed there. The same applies to beer and to any alcoholic drink at or below 30% ABV.

There is also no sales tax and no VAT in Hong Kong. The price you see is the price you pay.

What that means against other markets

In most wine-producing countries a bottle carries two separate charges before it reaches the shelf: an excise duty, and then VAT applied on top of the total. VAT is 20% in the United Kingdom and France, 22% in Italy, 21% in Spain.

So a bottle that leaves the château at the same price ends up meaningfully cheaper in Hong Kong than in the country that made it. This is not a marketing claim — it is arithmetic, and it is why Hong Kong became a serious wine trading hub after 2008.

Where it does not apply: spirits

Spirits above 30% ABV still carry duty. But this changed in October 2024: the structure became two-tier. The first HK$200 of the import price is taxed at 100%, and the portion above HK$200 is taxed at 10% — down from 100%.

In practice that made expensive spirits noticeably cheaper and left inexpensive ones roughly where they were. If you drink single malt or cognac at the higher end, Hong Kong got better in 2024.

The catch nobody mentions

Cheap wine is only cheap if it survives. Hong Kong's heat and humidity are hard on bottles, and most flats have nowhere cool to store them. A case bought at a good price and left in a hot cupboard for two years is not a saving.

This is the practical reason we have no minimum order. Buying two bottles when you want them beats buying twelve and watching them cook. If you do want to hold wine at home, a wine fridge does more for what ends up in your glass than trading up a price band.

What to check before assuming a price is good

• Bottle size. Compare 75cl to 75cl. Half bottles and magnums are priced differently per millilitre.
• Vintage. Two bottles with the same label and different years are different wines at different prices.
• Delivery. A low headline price with a high delivery charge is not a low price. Ours is free over HK$800, flat HK$80 below.
• Whether it is actually in stock. A price on a listing that has to be ordered in is a quotation, not a price.
