コレクション: Pessac-Léognan & Graves

Pessac-Léognan is the appellation on the edge of the city of Bordeaux itself — the oldest wine district in the region, and the only one where the vineyards are surrounded by suburbs.

What makes it different. The gravel soils here give the reds a smoky, mineral, almost tobacco-like edge that Médoc wines simply do not have. It is the most distinctive of all the Left Bank styles, and once you recognise it you cannot un-taste it.

It is also the only part of Bordeaux classified for both red and white. The whites — Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, often barrel-fermented — are among the finest dry whites in France and are badly overlooked in Hong Kong.

On our list

Château Pape Clément — producing wine continuously since around 1300, the oldest working vineyard in Bordeaux. Smith Haut Lafitte and Le Petit Haut Lafitte.

Try it with a grill. The smoky character makes these better with charcoal and barbecue than most Bordeaux.
