The Rhône splits cleanly in two, and the two halves make different wine.

North and south. The northern Rhône — Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage — is Syrah on its own, grown on steep granite slopes, peppery and firm. The southern Rhône is warmer and flatter, and blends Grenache with Syrah and Mourvèdre; Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas are the names to know. The south is generally rounder, riper and cheaper.
