Why they deserve more attention in Hong Kong
Most Hong Kong households are one or two people. A full bottle opened on a Tuesday either gets finished when it should not, or half of it oxidises in the fridge. The half bottle solves a real problem.
It also lets you trade up. The same money that buys an ordinary full bottle buys a considerably better half — and on a weeknight, a good wine in a smaller quantity is the better trade.
They are also useful for trying something before committing to a case, and for sweet wine, which is almost always sold this way because nobody drinks 750ml of Sauternes.
One thing to know
Wine ages faster in a half bottle — the same reason magnums age slowly, in reverse. More air per millilitre means quicker development. Buy halves to drink soon rather than to cellar.
