In the 1970s a handful of Tuscan producers did something that was against the rules: they planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in Tuscany and aged the wine in French barriques. Under Italian law at the time none of this was permitted, so these wines were sold as vino da tavola — the lowest legal category, alongside the cheapest bulk wine in the country.
They went on to become some of the most expensive wines in Italy. The press called them Super Tuscans and the name stuck.
The names that matter
Sassicaia — the original, from Tenuta San Guido on the Bolgheri coast. Cabernet-based, and now with its own appellation.
Tignanello — Antinori's Sangiovese blended with Cabernet. The wine that made the category commercial.
Solaia — Antinori's Cabernet-led counterpart to Tignanello.
Ornellaia and Masseto — Bolgheri neighbours; Masseto is pure Merlot and among the most sought-after wines in the world.
Guidalberto and Le Difese — Tenuta San Guido's more accessible bottlings. The realistic way to drink from that estate.
Why they sell in Hong Kong
These are among the very few Italian names that carry the same recognition here as classified Bordeaux. If you are giving Italian wine as a gift, this is the category where the recipient will know what they are holding.
