コレクション: Champagne

Champagne, delivered in Hong Kong. This is the full champagne list — from the houses most people already know (Veuve Clicquot, Ruinart, Perrier-Jouët, Charles Heidsieck) through to grower champagnes, made and bottled by the families who farm the vines.

Not sure which to pick? Non-vintage brut is the everyday bottle, and the safest choice as a gift. Blanc de blancs is 100% Chardonnay — lighter, good before dinner. Rosé champagne handles richer food. Vintage is declared only in stronger years, and is the one worth keeping.

よくあるご質問

Is vintage Champagne worth paying more for than non-vintage?

Vintage Champagne comes from a single declared year and must age at least three years on its lees, usually longer. That gives it more depth and a longer drinking window. Non-vintage blends several years for a consistent house style, and it is the everyday choice for parties and aperitifs. Pay up for vintage when the bottle is the occasion. Browse vintage Champagne.

What is a grower Champagne?

A grower Champagne is made by the same estate that farms the grapes, rather than by a large house buying fruit from many villages. Bottles carry the small letters RM on the label. The style tends to reflect one village or a handful of plots, so it varies more from producer to producer. Volumes are small and the wines suit people who already know the big houses.

Blanc de Blancs or Blanc de Noirs — what is the difference?

Blanc de Blancs is made only from white grapes, in practice almost always Chardonnay. It is usually lighter, more citrus and mineral in feel, and works well as an aperitif. Blanc de Noirs is made from black grapes, Pinot Noir and Meunier, pressed so the juice stays pale. It is fuller and rounder, and holds up better with food. Browse Blanc de Blancs.

What do Brut, Extra Brut and Demi-Sec mean on a Champagne label?

These describe how much sugar was added after disgorgement. Extra Brut is very dry, Brut is dry and covers most bottles sold today, Extra Dry is slightly off-dry despite the name, and Demi-Sec is noticeably sweet and suits desserts. If you are unsure what a table will like, Brut is the safe middle ground.

Is Champagne cheaper in Hong Kong than in Europe?

Often yes. Hong Kong abolished wine duty in 2008 and has no sales tax or VAT, so a bottle here carries no consumption tax at all. In much of Europe you pay VAT of roughly 20 percent on top of the shelf price. Freight and storage still cost money, so the gap varies by bottle, but Hong Kong is genuinely competitive on wine.

How should I chill and serve Champagne at home in Hong Kong?

Serve it around 8 to 10 degrees Celsius. An ice bucket with half water and half ice for twenty minutes is faster and more even than the fridge door. Skip the freezer, which dulls the aromas. Pour into a tulip glass rather than a flat coupe, and tilt the glass so the bubbles stay. Once opened, a stopper keeps it lively for about two days.
