These two villages share the Montrachet hill — the most celebrated site for Chardonnay anywhere in the world — and split its Grand Crus between them.
The difference between the two
Puligny-Montrachet is the more precise and mineral of the pair: tighter, higher-toned, and slower to open. It is generally considered the finest white wine village in Burgundy.
Chassagne-Montrachet is broader and rounder, with a touch more flesh and slightly earlier appeal. It also makes red wine, which Puligny effectively does not.
The Grand Crus — Montrachet itself, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues and Criots — sit on the boundary between them. These are among the most expensive white wines in existence.
Practical note. Both villages reward age more than most people allow. A good Premier Cru is often awkward at three years and lovely at eight. Serve 12–13°C.
