Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello is 100% Sangiovese from the hill town of Montalcino in southern Tuscany — the same grape as Chianti, but a different clone, a warmer site, and far stricter rules.

The five-year rule. Brunello cannot be released until five years after the harvest, and Riserva needs six. That means every bottle you buy has already had substantial ageing done for you. It is one of the few Italian wines that arrives ready.

What it tastes like. Sour cherry and dried herbs with real grip. More serious and more savoury than Chianti, and it wants a proper meal — steak, braised beef, aged Pecorino.
