Nuits-Saint-Georges is the southern anchor of the Côte de Nuits and the commercial capital of the region — most of the négociant houses are based here.
The style. Firm, earthy and savoury rather than floral. It has more grip than Vosne-Romanée and less perfume, and it is one of the slower-developing red Burgundy villages.
An oddity. Nuits-Saint-Georges has no Grand Cru — but several of its Premier Crus, particularly Les Saint-Georges and Les Vaucrains, have long been argued to deserve promotion.
Value note. Because it lacks Grand Cru prestige, Nuits-Saint-Georges is one of the better-value serious red Burgundy villages. You are paying for the wine rather than the ranking.
Decant an hour. Serve 14–16°C. Duck, game birds, mushrooms.
