What it does well. Chenin Blanc is the country's calling card, and the old-vine bottlings from the Swartland come from vineyards planted decades ago that give small, concentrated crops. Stellenbosch makes the serious reds — Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends with more grip than their price suggests. Pinotage is South Africa's own crossing, and worth trying from a good producer.
