Grand Cru classifies the vineyard, not the producer. That is the fundamental difference from Bordeaux, where the château is ranked and the ranking is effectively permanent.

In Burgundy just over 1% of the vineyard area is Grand Cru — 33 sites in the Côte d'Or plus the Grand Cru hillside at Chablis. These plots were mapped centuries ago, largely by Cistercian monks who worked out which slopes ripened best, and the boundaries have barely moved since.

How the Burgundy ladder works

Bourgogne (regional) → Village → Premier Cru → Grand Cru. Price climbs the same way, and usually so does quality.

The same words, different regions

Grand Cru also exists in Alsace (51 sites), the Loire (Quarts de Chaume), and Champagne — where it ranks whole villages rather than individual plots. It is not one system, and the tiers are not equivalent across regions.

What it does not guarantee

A Grand Cru from a careless producer is beaten by a village wine from a great one — routinely. In Burgundy the grower's name matters at least as much as the vineyard's.

Buying advice. If this is your first Grand Cru, buy from a producer whose village or Premier Cru wines you already like. That is the honest route in; the vineyard name alone is not enough.
