Japanese red wine, still a small category and mostly from Yamanashi and Nagano.

What to expect. Muscat Bailey A is the signature grape — a crossing bred in Japan in the 1920s, light in body and noticeably fruity, closer to a Beaujolais in weight than to Bordeaux. Merlot from Nagano is the other one worth knowing. Japan's growing season is wet, which is the constraint every producer here is working against, so quantities are small.
