Penfolds St Henri-Cork Closure 2018 (1x75cl)

St Henri is the Penfolds Shiraz that goes against the house grain: matured in large, old oak vats rather than new barriques, so there is no new-oak influence at all.

Why that matters. Most premium Australian Shiraz is shaped by new oak. St Henri deliberately is not, so what you taste is the fruit and the vintage rather than the barrel. Within the Penfolds range it is the counterpoint to Grange.

Why 2018. A warm, even growing season in South Australia and one of the stronger recent vintages — ripe, generous fruit with the structure to age.

When to drink it. Drinkable now with an hour in a decanter, and it will keep for a decade or more. Lamb, beef, anything off a grill.

How it compares. 2020 is the younger release; 2018 has had more time in bottle.
