Opus One is one of the few Californian names Hong Kong collectors recognise the moment they see the label, and this one carries a 1983 on it. Four decades in bottle means it belongs to a different kind of evening than a young wine does — a birth-year dinner, an anniversary table, or a gift for a client who already has a cellar full of the usual suspects.

Tasting notes

A Napa Valley Bordeaux-style blend usually leans on cassis, cedar and a bit of tobacco, and with this much bottle age those primary fruit notes typically soften into dried fruit, leather and forest floor. Tannins at this stage are generally fine and settled rather than firm.
