Chateau Sociando Mallet 2014 (1x75cl)

Sociando-Mallet sits on gravel soils overlooking the Gironde, next to Saint-Estèphe. It has no classification at all — the estate declined to enter the Cru Bourgeois system — and yet it is regularly rated alongside classified growths.

The style. Firmer and more serious than most Haut-Médoc at the price. Cabernet Sauvignon-led, with real structure and a long finish. This is a wine for people who want Bordeaux to taste like Bordeaux rather than like fruit.

When to drink it. 2014 is drinking well now but has years left. Decant an hour ahead. Steak, lamb, anything off a grill.

Is it worth it? This is the classic "knows what they are doing" bottle — someone who follows Bordeaux will recognise the name immediately and know it punches above its price.
