Haut-Médoc sits just outside the famous village names of the left bank, which is usually where you find Bordeaux that drinks well without the price of a headline label. Good enough for guests, sensible enough for a Wednesday.

Open it half an hour before dinner. It handles rich food — braised beef brisket, lamb, roast duck — better than it handles being sipped on its own.

Haut-Médoc blends typically show dark plum and blackcurrant with a leafy, cedar note and medium tannins — usually approachable young with a dry, savoury finish.
