Saint-Estephe on the left bank of Bordeaux, from a warm 2003 growing season, and now more than twenty years in bottle. Wines with this much age are usually softer and more savoury than a young Bordeaux, with the tannin having settled down over time.
This is a bottle for a proper dinner or a serious client gift rather than a Tuesday night. Do keep in mind that bottles this old vary from one to the next depending on how they were stored, so open it a little early, stand it upright for a day beforehand, and decant off any sediment.
Tasting notes
Aged left bank Bordeaux typically shows dried blackcurrant and plum turning towards tobacco, cedar and forest floor, with the fruit quieter and the texture rounder than in youth. Best with lamb, beef or aged cheese.
