Mid-Autumn Wine Gifts: What to Give, and How Much to Spend

Mid-Autumn Festival falls on Friday 25 September 2026. If you are giving wine this year — to colleagues, clients, family or your boss — the two questions that actually matter are how much to spend, and whether it will arrive in time.
How much is the right amount?
There is no rule, but there is a convention in Hong Kong, and getting it roughly right matters more than getting the wine itself right. Spend too little and it reads as an afterthought. Spend too much on a casual relationship and it becomes awkward — the recipient now owes you something.

If you are sending to a long list at mixed levels, it is normal to buy two or three different bottles rather than one for everyone.
What to actually give
Champagne, if you want the safest answer
A recognisable champagne is the lowest-risk gift there is. The recipient knows what it is without being told, it needs no explanation, and almost nobody dislikes it. Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label and Piper-Heidsieck sit under HK$300. Ruinart Blanc de Blancs and Bollinger sit in the middle. Dom Pérignon is the one that reads as an occasion.
Bordeaux, if the recipient drinks red
A classified Bordeaux estate name carries weight in Hong Kong in a way few other wines do. The trick is knowing about second wines: Chevalier de Lascombes is made at Château Lascombes, a Second Growth of Margaux, by the same team from younger vines. It carries a Margaux address at a fraction of the price.
Whisky, if you know they prefer spirits
The Macallan, Yamazaki and Hakushu are the names that land in Hong Kong. Most bottles above HK$800 come in their own presentation box.
Two mistakes people make
Assuming older is better
It usually is not. A bottle over ten years old may be past its drinking window, and cork condition on older bottles varies. Unless you know for certain that the recipient collects wine, a recent vintage in good condition is the better gift — and the safer one.
Forgetting where it will be stored
Most Hong Kong flats have nowhere cool to keep wine, and heat and humidity are hard on bottles left out. If your recipient does not own a wine fridge, give something they will open in the next few weeks rather than something that needs cellaring. A bottle that sits in a hot cupboard for two years is not a gift, it is a problem.

Sending to an office or a hotel
We deliver to offices and hotels across Hong Kong, and the recipient does not need to be there — reception or the concierge can sign. If you are sending to a list of clients at different addresses, tell us the list and we will handle it.
Free delivery on orders over HK$800. Under that, a flat HK$80. No minimum order, so a mixed list of budgets is not a problem.
