Reading a Rioja label. Spain grades by how long the wine was aged before release: Crianza is the youngest, then Reserva, then Gran Reserva, which spends years in oak and bottle before it reaches you. That means an older Spanish wine is often ready to drink on arrival, unlike Bordeaux of the same age. Ribera del Duero uses the same grape with more weight; Priorat is darker and firmer again.
