For two decades it has been rated, and priced, well above its classification.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe reason is a decision the estate made that almost no other classified Bordeaux château has been willing to copy.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eWhat makes it different\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003ePontet-Canet is farmed \u003cstrong\u003ebiodynamically\u003c\/strong\u003e. In practice that means: horses working the vineyard instead of tractors, so the soil is not compacted; no synthetic treatments; and a portion of the wine aged in \u003cstrong\u003eclay amphorae\u003c\/strong\u003e made from the estate's own soil rather than only in oak barrels.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThat last point is the one that shows in the glass. Amphorae add no flavour of their own, so the wine tastes more of the vineyard and less of the barrel. It is the opposite of the oak-heavy direction most of Bordeaux took in the 1990s.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis is not a marketing position.
